The 2009 Kaycee Sheep Industry Festival and
Kaycee
Challenge Sheep Dog Trial promises great food, family fun, and an
international-caliber sheep dog trial.
For
the fifth year Kaycee, Wyoming will host a Sheep Industry Festival
featuring an International Sheep Dog Trial of 50 top Border Collies
September 5th through September 7th. Offering a purse of $10,000, the
sheep dog trial draws top competitors from the US and Canada and will
include a number of local dogs and handlers.
The event, which opens with the dog trials beginning at 7 a.m. on
Saturday followed by the festival opening at 8 a.m. will feature sheep
industry-related vendors and artisans and will include a sheep wagon
display, craft and fiber festival, food vendors, educational exhibits,
cultural exhibits, authors, and bag piping. Saturday evening
will
include a social hour, entertainment, and a silent auction at Harold
Jarrard Park. The evening will be capped off with the
World Celebration of the Wool Fashion Industry and "People's
Choice" lamb cook-off at 7 p.m. Each year the cook-off
is a huge hit with a wide variety of lamb dishes for tasting.
The sheep industry has historically been an important part of the local
culture and continues to be today. The Festival is a way the
local sheep and wool-growing community shows people the importance of
sheep in the local communities and economies and displays some of the
wares and arts of the trade.
The weekend will focus on all-things sheep and offer hands-on
opportunities for people interested in spinning, knitting and
grading. Delicious food, Western art and beautiful
wool-related
crafts will be featured.
A highlight of the event will be the dog trials which will run
throughout much of the weekend. People will be able to see the
magic of dog and handler working as a team to move sheep through a
difficult course designed to mimic real ranch work. The judge,
Bevis Jordan of Northumberland, England is
a shepherd who understands quality dog work and will judge
based on an international standard. Preliminary rounds will be Saturday
and Sunday with the top 10 Border Collies competing in the Finals
beginning at 1 p.m. on Monday.
New this year, Monday will also feature a video yearling ewe sale and
silent bid breeding ram sale at 11 a.m.
Due
to the nature of this event, we absolutely cannot allow pets at the
Festival/Trial site. We appreciate your understanding.
